After a building permit is issued, several site inspections are required prior to final approval and the issuance of an occupancy permit. A City of Nelson Building Inspector is required to do site inspections at the following stages of construction:
- Footings Inspection
- Property pins or a legal surveyed plot plan required
- On completion of form work for the footings, prior to pouring concrete
- Backfilling Inspection
- On completion of damp-proofing, drain tiles and drain rock (if required), prior to backfilling
- Plumbing Inspection
- Prior to covering of groundwork and above grade rough in (exfiltration test and pressure test to property line for sewer and water)
- Framing Inspection
- After the entire rough-in plumbing is completed, electrical work and heating equipment is installed and the framing is completed to lockup stage, prior to insulating
- Fireplace Inspection
- First inspection - installation of first flue lines above smoke chamber · Second inspection - chimney cap, but prior to installing
- Insulation Inspection
- After all insulation and vapour barriers are installed but prior to covering
- Occupancy Inspection
- Prior to anyone occupying any part of a building
