Voting Information

Advance Voting Opportunities

Voting hours are 8:00am to 8:00pm for all dates and locations.

  • Wednesday October 10, 2018 - City Hall (310 Ward Street - 2nd Floor)
  • Wednesday October 17, 2018 - City Hall (310 Ward Street - 2nd Floor)

General Voting Day

Voting will take place Saturday October 20, 2018 from 8:00am - 8:00pm at the following location:

  • Central School (811 Stanley Street in Nelson)

Voting Assistance

All voting locations are made as accessible as possible to people with disabilities or impaired mobility. Individuals who find it difficult to enter a voting location may request a ballot be brought to them at the back entrance or curbside by an Election Official.

Individuals who are unable to mark their own ballot or who require a translator may ask an Election Official, friend or relative for help. Anyone assisting an elector with filing out a ballot will be required to sign a Declaration of Persons Assisting an Elector to Mark a Ballot Form.

Who Can Vote

Resident Electors

To vote as a resident elector, a person must:

  • be 18 years of age or older on the day of registration, or if an election or assent vote is in progress, 18 years of age or older on general voting day;
  • be a Canadian citizen;
  • have been a resident of the City of Nelson for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  • not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law.

Non-Resident Property Electors

To vote as a non-resident property elector, a person must:

  • not be entitled to register as a resident elector of the municipality or electoral area (i.e., cannot vote as both a resident and non-resident property elector in the same municipality or electoral area);
  • be 18 years of age or older when you register to vote or will be 18 years of age or older on general voting day;
  • be a Canadian citizen;
  • have been a resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately before the before the day of registration;
  • be a registered owner of property in the City of Nelson for at least 30 days immediately before the day you register to vote.

In addition, you must not be:

  • disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or be otherwise disqualified by law;
  • living in the City of Nelson;
  • holding property in trust.

How do non-resident property owners register?  

You may register by providing all required documentation at either advance voting place on October 10 & 17, 2018 and on general election day on October 20, 2018.
