Information for Candidates
Candidates must submit a Candidate Nomination Package between February 9, 2021, and 4:00 pm on February 19, 2021 in order to be included as a candidate for the City of Nelson 2021 By-election. The forms along with other important information are available for download on this page, via email request to elections@nelson.ca or by picking up a package from City Hall. Please note that in light of the Provincial Health Order, downloading a package or requesting one by email is preferred.

September 24, 2020 | Last day to meet six (6) month BC residency elector requirement on Voting Day |
January 13, 2021 | Nomination and endorsement packages available |
February 9, 2021 | Nomination period begins |
February 19, 2021 | Nomination period closes at 4:00 pm |
February 23, 2021 | Deadline to challenge nominations and elector organization endorsements |
February 26, 2021 | Deadline for decision on challenging candidate nominations, candidate withdrawal, or candidate endorsement withdrawal by the elector organization |
February 27, 2021 | Start of the campaign period |
March 17, 2021 | First advance voting opportunity |
March 24, 2021 | Second advance voting opportunity |
March 27, 2021 | General Voting Day from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm |
June 25, 2021 | Deadline for submission of campaign financing disclosure statement to Elections BC |
July 27, 2021 | Deadline for late submission of campaign financing disclosure statement to Elections BC (subject to a $500 late filing fee) |
Some ways to prepare if you are considering running for Council:
- Stream Council meetings to learn about priority issues/projects and observe what being on Council might be like;
- Look at the City of Nelson's key planning documents and reports;
- Get to know key groups in the community to understand the diversity of interests in our area;
- Research the internet for information about local government and basic facts about the local government system in BC.
