On Friday April 22 at 6PM a motorist called to report a pair of intoxicated males on the side of the highway who had thrown something at his truck. When he pulled over to talk to them one attempted to fight him so he left and called NPD. Officers arrived to find the two still in the same area drinking. One was arrested and charged with public intoxication, lodged into cells and released when he was no longer a danger to others. The other was charged for consuming liquor in public and, being sober enough to care for himself, was allowed to go to a nearby friends home for the evening. NPD file 2014-1596 refers.
On Saturday April 23 at 11:00PM the Nelson Police received several 911 calls about a crazed male covered in blood running around breaking windows in the downtown area. One person attended NPD office to report he had smashed her car windshield with her still in the vehicle. Nelson Police members raced to the scene and managed to take the obviously delusional male into custody. He had to be transported to hospital due to his bizarre behavior and injuries he caused himself. The 33 year old male remains in police custody and will appear in Rossland court April 23 to answer to charges of mischief to property, causing a disturbance, resisting arrest and breaching release conditions. The annual Fair was in Nelson over the Easter weekend. The Nelson Police increased patrols to ensure a safe fun time for people of all ages. There were numerous liquor seizures in and around the event but no major incidents.
As a reminder to those that feel they need to have a drink at these type of events the fine for carrying open liquor or consuming it in a public place is $230.
On Saturday February 8 at 1:45 AM the Nelson Police were called to the uphill area to assist with a small house party that had gotten out of control. A guest had consumed too much liquor and became combative and when thrown out began trying to break back in. When Police arrived he was taken into custody and lodged into cells. It was there that a quantity of marijuana was found in his pockets and that he was bound by numerous conditions from another jurisdiction forbidding him to consume liquor and to be in his home by a certain time. When sober the young male was released and will appear in Nelson courts to answer to charges of possession of a controlled substance, mischief to property, and breaching release conditions. On Saturday February 8 at 2:45AM the Nelson Police were called to the 600 block Baker St for excessive noise at a facility and discovered several violations of the liquor permit issued for the event. The 40 year old party host was sanctioned under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act for failing to clear patron out in time and allowing patrons to consume after the event closed. On Sunday February 9 at 12:25AM staff at a local pub called to requested police assistance with several males who had been refused entry and were harassing the doorman. They had determined they were too intoxicated to allow inside which did not sit well with the males. Nelson Police members attended and all but one immediately left. The last one, a 32 year old student in Nelson decided to remain. He was detained for public intoxication and members immediately noted the stolen shoes sticking out of his pockets. While being searched incident to his arrest for the stolen property a quantity of street drugs were found on him. He was lodged into cells until sober and will appear in court April 29 to answer to charges of possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and public intoxication. On Sunday Nov 10 at 9:54AM the Nelson Police responded to a report of a single vehicle accident on Hwy 3A/Lakeview Crescent. The vehicle had driven over the bank and rolled over at that location. The 26 year old driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, sustained only minor injuries. Speed and alcohol were a factor. The driver was issues a 90 day immediate roadside suspension after providing samples of his breath. NPD file 2013-5361 refers.
On Monday November 11 at 4:40PM an intoxicated male approached a female shopper outside Save on Foods, asking for change. He became belligerent, swore and followed her to her car when he did not receive any money. She managed to leave the area safely and then called Nelson Police. The 51 year old local male, who is known to police was located and arrested for causing a disturbance and public intoxication. He was lodged into cells until sober. He will appear in court in the New Year to answer to the charges. NPD file 2013-5377 refers.
On Tuesday November 12 at 12:30PM a local male driving downtown was waiting for pedestrians to clear the crosswalk so he could proceed on a green light. One male made a point of lingering in front of his car so the driver honked his horn as the light was now green for him. The male then kicked the car, and tried to entice the driver to fight. A female companion of the male encouraged him to apologize and move on while the driver called police. Knowing police were on the way the male fled the area. The Nelson Police believe they know who the male is and are looking to speak with him about this incident. NPD file 2013-5382 refers.
