COVID-19 PANDEMIC UPDATE #39 – CITY OF NELSON

Dr. Bonnie Henry on Re-Opening BC: “A steady stream will be far more successful than a rushing river.”

Today, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry encouraged British Columbians to be patient ahead of the easing of restrictions that will begin at the end of this week. Dr. Henry said “COVID-19 hasn’t gone away…we need to strike the right balance with easing restrictions.” She added “We are in a much better place….but we want to move slowly and thoughtfully.”

With the approaching long weekend, Minister Adrian Dix urged British Columbians to adhere to physical distancing and to avoid non-essential travel. He said, “Stay local, stay apart, stay safe….the best place you can be is where you live.”

Nelson Public Library Launches Takeout Service

The Nelson Public Library has unveiled an innovative way to get library materials in the hands of readers. Library members can now place pick-up orders for library materials. ‘Library Takeout’ is a click or call-and-collect service. Library staff will gather books from the shelves to be picked up by members. Members can request specific titles or ask the librarians to choose titles.

Materials must be picked up during pre-scheduled appointment times to control the number of people coming to the library. Staff members will place ‘Library Takeout’ bags in spaces designed for social distancing for a contactless pick-up transaction. For safety reasons, when materials are returned to the library, they will be quarantined for at least 72-hours.

To ensure the program complies with health and safety recommendations, the library sought advice from local health authorities and the City of Nelson’s Health and Safety Department.

Federal Minister of Health Celebrates National Nursing Week, May 11-17

National Nursing Week is about recognizing the incredible contributions that nurses make to our lives every day of the year - contributions that have never been more evident than during this pandemic.

Throughout the response to COVID-19, nurses have stepped up to provide exceptional leadership, coordination and support. Whether on the front lines, behind the scenes, or providing surge capacity to a partnering organization, they have been central to Canada’s response.

As Canadians feel the weight of social isolation and physical distancing, nursing professionals continue to care for us. They are no doubt also feeling the pressure of extra work, changes in priorities and physical distancing. As always, nurses are a model of professionalism, demonstrating courage and skill in extraordinary times. I encourage all Canadians, including nurses, who need support to reach out to one of the many resources available to help, such as the new Wellness Together Canada portal, which provides mental health and substance use support.

Please join me in giving a heartfelt thank you to all nurses during this week.

The Honourable Patty Hajdu, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Health
