Duties and Responsibilities

Welcome  to  Nelson Fire and Rescue Service. Our members serve the City of  Nelson and  surrounding Fire Protection District (RDCK Area E) 24 hours a  day year  round, with 2 members on duty at all times, who respond to an  average of  1,200 emergency incidents including (but certainly not  limited to)  fire, first responder, motor vehicle accident and hazardous materials  incidents and 150 to 200 high priority public service calls per year. We operate in one of Western Canada's oldest fire halls, which was built in 1913. We welcome visitors and groups to tour of our heritage building, see our museum, and learn about fire safety.

No Call Goes Unanswered

Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Department consists of an Assistant Chief, Fire  Prevention Officer/Captain, two Captains, six Firefighters, and a  Secretary-Dispatcher, as well as twenty on-call Auxiliary Firefighters.  All career members have training minimums of NFPA 1001 - Fire Fighter  Professional Qualifications, and all Officers are trained to NFPA 1021-  Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. Nelson Fire and Rescue  Service’s apparatus fleet includes two fire engines, one aerial ladder/platform truck, one rescue truck and a water tender.
