Nelson Hydro generates its own local electricity but can only produce enough to serve about 50% of its customers, so the remainder is purchased through FortisBC. When it was launched in 2012, the City of Nelson’s EcoSave program was the first energy efficiency program of its kind to be developed in Canada. In 2019, it was expanded to include the Regional District, creating the Regional Energy Efficiency Program. Over the past decade it has helped over 1,500 homeowners achieve their energy-efficiency goals.
