On January 20, 2026, the Nelson Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls reporting glass breaking and yelling in the 900 block of 4th Street.
Police subsequently received information that a male had left the area on foot and was believed to be in possession of a knife. Officers located the male nearby and engaged with him.
During the interaction, the male produced a knife in a threatening manner and made statements indicating distress. Officers maintained distance and engaged the individual using communication and de‑escalation strategies. As a precaution, officers drew their service firearms while continuing efforts to resolve the situation safely.
The male ultimately complied with police direction and dropped the knife. He was taken into custody without injury to the public, the individual, or officers.
Once in custody, police determined the male was experiencing a health‑related crisis. He was transported to Kootenay Lake Hospital to receive appropriate medical care.
The Nelson Police Department would like to thank members of the public for reporting their concerns promptly and for their cooperation during the police response.
As this matter remains under investigation, police will not be providing any further information at this time.
