Nelson Police warn of banking fraud

2025-93: A Nelson resident was defrauded of nearly $10,000 when a caller impersonated a representative from their bank.

“These types of scams are unfortunately getting more common and more sophisticated,” says Special Constable Edwards, “It’s important to learn about them and take steps to protect yourself.”

The unknown caller told the victim that they were calling from RBC and that there had been suspicious activity on their account. They convinced the victim to share their banking details and to transfer $9,800 to a different account, which the victim believed to be their own. It was only later, when the money failed to appear in the second account, that the victim realized they had been defrauded and contacted police.

Scammers can change caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from a legitimate source. When in doubt, hang up and call back on the phone number listed on the official website or visit the bank in person instead of doing transactions by phone. Never transfer money without being certain of where it is going. For more information on fraud and how to avoid it, contact the Nelson Police Department.

NPD sees uptick in drug overdoses

2025-164/2025-174: Over the last two weeks, the Nelson Police Department has responded to several calls for drug overdoses.

“Fortunately, we’ve had no fatalities, but the risk is always there,” says Special Constable Edwards.

Cold weather can exacerbate the risk of overdose. Opioids, in particular, slow a person’s breathing rate and reduce core body temperature, which can lead to overdose more quickly in low temperatures. Narcan is not always effective to treat overdose, as street drugs can be cut with unknown substances.

If you suspect someone is overdosing, call 911 immediately.
